About  Us

We  are the Birmingham Central Literary Association, and we are a very old society, dating back to 1856.  Our aim is to promote an appreciation of all kinds of literature both past and present.  At our meetings we have talks, discussions, poetry and play readings.

On the social side we have an Annual Shakespeare dinner, which started in 1889, so we have had over 100 of these so far.  We have occasional theatre visits, a Christmas party (of course) and an annual day trip in the summer (usually to a place of literary interest).  Recent places visited have been D.H.Lawrence’s museum near Nottingham and Lord Byron’s home at Newstead Abbey.  Our summer trip for 2011 was to Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire.
